The Underdark of Litara is an immense and dangerous subterranean world, divided into seven layers. The deeper one descends, the more the nature of this place transforms. Beneath the earth and stone, ancient laws reign, and the dangers here are unlike anything on the surface.

Inhabitants and Cultures

The Underdark is home to a wide variety of beings. Among its denizens are the myconids, whose glowing fungal colonies bring faint light to the darkness; the dark elves (drow), renowned for their intrigues and mastery of magic; and countless other creatures described in the world’s lore. Most of them live in isolation, navigating paths known only to themselves. Some rule small pockets of relative peace, but such balances rarely last.

The Mystery of the Heart of Sardior

Mentions of the Heart of Sardior are rare and often whispered, guarded in secret by scholars and sages. Deep within the Underdark lies something ancient, imbued with a pure, unfathomable magic that shifts the balance of power across all seven layers. Whispers speak of a ruby glow, tied to an ancient dragon, Sardior, whose legacy is entwined with this power. While the truth remains shrouded, the Heart exudes magical anomalies that influence every level of the Underdark.

The Magic of the Depths

Magic flows through the Underdark like a subterranean river, originating from its deepest reaches and radiating outward. Closer to the lowest layers, the concentration of magic becomes overwhelming. Different creatures—necromancers, beholders, drow, and more—tap into this energy in their own ways, shaping its essence. The deeper one ventures, the stranger and more alien these magical phenomena become, infusing the very environment with power.

Interaction with the Surface

Surface dwellers seldom interact with the depths of the Underdark. Only a few villages near its entrances are forced to coexist with its proximity. Without a strong protector or skilled adventurers, these villagers live in fear of the horrors that emerge from below. Occasionally, bands of explorers or mercenaries are hired to delve into the depths to safeguard the surface from its terrors.

The Effects on the Mind

Spending too much time in the Underdark leaves its mark. Those who venture too deep for too long suffer from insomnia, panic attacks, paranoia, and an overwhelming sense of dread. The absence of sunlight and the disorienting environment dissolve the natural rhythm of life. While physical changes are minimal—skin grows slightly paler and features more gaunt—the psychological toll can be immense. Survivors often require significant time to readjust to life on the surface, haunted by the whispers of the dark.

Thus, the Underdark of Litara is not merely a collection of caves but a living, breathing realm of mystery and peril. Hidden far below the surface, it serves as a test for the brave, a treasure for the greedy, and a curse for the unwary. At its core lies a power so profound that its ripples can be felt even in the world above.
