Fenris was originally a young man from Faerûn, born approximately 1,200 years ago. He became one of the first acolytes of a small guild devoted to Lathander, the god of the sun, which was just beginning to establish itself. Alongside the guild leader and other acolytes, he achieved the rank of “Knight of Lathander” and swore a blood oath to serve the faith, the unwavering leader, and his comrades—the “sons and daughters of Lathander.”

However, fate had other plans. The guild leader turned out to be far less steadfast than he appeared. A lust for power drove him to betray his companions and strike a deal with a devil, selling his soul in exchange for the might of the enemy the guild was originally founded to oppose. Due to the blood oath binding the acolytes, the souls of all guild members, including Fenris, were unwittingly pulled into this infernal contract. Fenris, his friends, and other acolytes became captives of their leader and his new master, imprisoned in Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells. Though a group of heroes managed to escape, leaving their companions behind, Fenris was deeply shaken by the betrayal and the horrors of Avernus. After his escape, he turned to prayer, beseeching Lathander for forgiveness.

When Fenris grew old and passed away, his soul, still bound by the infernal contract, was once again drawn to Avernus. In a desperate bid to escape, his soul inhabited a newly deceased body. Uncertain of the nature of his new existence, Fenris once more dedicated himself to prayer, hoping his soul would finally find peace after his next death. Yet fate intervened again—after succumbing to illness, his soul was wrenched back to Avernus. This cycle repeated itself over and over. After enduring 12–15 such reincarnations, Fenris lost his faith in Lathander. His soul eventually found itself in Teragon, where it inhabited the body of a wood elf killed by wild beasts. Gradually, Fenris became involved in the affairs of Teragon, hoping that this new land and its mysteries might help him break the cursed cycle of reincarnation and finally find rest.
