Session 47: Fregnard — Overgrown Rat

Surina, Saya, Brotor, and Fregnard rushed to aid Fenris and Danaya, who were battling over the Storm Cauldron — a magical anchor keeping Lux Astra tethered to the Astral Plane.

At the base of Sevad Tower, Brotor heard the sound of shattering glass above. Looking up, he saw Surina burst out of a window with spectral wings, carrying Saya in her arms. Fregnard Blixsen was clinging to her leg, screaming in terror, but with a swift motion he cut the strap of her bag and tossed it back into the tower window.

When Brotor caught up to Saya and Surina, he immediately shared what he had seen. Surina’s eyes blazed with righteous fury. She attacked Fregnard, called him an “overgrown rat,” and even tried to stuff him into a Bag of Holding to suffocate him — nearly betraying all the ideals of Bahamut. The old gnome, aided by magical items, narrowly avoided a swift end and used every trick in the book to stall and distract the party, keeping them from reaching Fenris and Danaya — who at that moment were deep beneath Lux Astra, fighting the Georges.

Eventually, the first group reached their friends, though not as quickly as they had hoped.

Danaya, still in the form of a giant ape, regained consciousness after brutal blows, ran to the cauldron, and shielded it with her body. Immediately, mechanical sentinels cast a spell on her, paralyzing her, while Fenris was trapped in an invisible field, unable to move.

In that fateful moment, the lead sentinel, George, struck the final blow: the cauldron — the heart of Lux Astra — shattered. Danaya fell into the molten metal, losing her beast form and returning to her true tiefling shape. Brotor rushed to help and pulled her from the molten pool. The city began plummeting from the Astral Plane back into Terragon. The lead George activated a self-destruct protocol.

In a desperate bid to buy time, Saya and Fenris summoned all their remaining strength and cast “Banishment,” sending Fregnard and his allies to another plane, granting them 60 precious seconds.

Pressed for time, Saya pulled out the Wish scroll, briefly discussed the wording with her companions, and quickly pronounced:

I want Lux Astra to be relocated to the safest possible place in the Astral Plane, where it cannot be affected, moved, or destroyed by any magical or non-magical means. I also wish for the consciousness and safety of all citizens of Lux Astra and my party members to remain intact, with no paradoxes of time or space.

I want all objects within Lux Astra to remain exactly as they are, unaffected by any harmful magical, non-magical, or other effects — including the city itself. Triple underlined and circled in red marker: Everything must be safe. No harm done.

Moments later, the mental image of Lady Pain appeared before the heroes. She examined them and declared:

Very well. If you wish to become part of Sigil, I accept. So be it.

Just then, the panting druid Iskar ran up the steps. Seeing Lux Astra now resting in the very heart of Sigil, his face burned with indignation. But the heroes had no time for him — they rushed to the tower, hoping to find the Skull of Ptaris, only to discover an empty bag and a used teleportation glyph on the floor.

Exhausted from battle, they decided to rest and headed home. Grumbling, Iskar followed. On the way, the heroes noticed all the citizens of Lux Astra had turned to stone. Even more striking was the sight of Sigil itself: a city-ring located on the inner surface of a massive torus, hovering above a colossal mountain at the center of the cosmos. To ease the tension, Brotor brewed tea with hallucinogenic mushrooms, and the friends finally relaxed on soft couches.

Sipping his tea, Iskar revealed that he had already negotiated with Marya for passage to the heart of Sardior. As part of the deal, he had sent her Princess Eola, who once adorned the Lux Astra fountain. But the heroes were skeptical — Marya would almost certainly demand the Tear of Sardior, a relic they had no intention of giving up. Suddenly, Iskar, blushing, confessed that his heart had long belonged to Ptaris, and perhaps it was this passion that led him to act so rashly.

They had no strength left. The heroes decided to postpone their plans until morning: a well-earned sleep called to them, promising peace after the battles and losses.
